Fancy Dress Costumes
One of the big movies released in our cinemas this week was Rush, the tale of Formula One racing drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda. As the Formula One championship comes to a close the release of this movie is perfectly timed and will have no doubt have been enjoyed by the Formula One drivers of our times.
Rush is set in the 1970s and is a story of the rivalry between Ferrari driver Niki Laua and McLaren driver James Hunt. Directed by former Happy Days star, Ron Howard, this is one of the best motor racing films I have seen. The film really captures the era and it isn’t just a film for petrol heads, fans of fashion will also enjoy reliving the 70’s.
Films and movies are a great basis for a themed fancy dress party or for a characters fancy dress costume, so if you are planning a celebration why not consider it being a movie theme? You could give your guests free reign to come as any movie character, past or present, or make it more of a challenge by setting an era or decade related to the year of your birth. So for a 40th birthday celebration make it a 1970’s film related party where Rush would fit in as well as a character from The Godfather, Star Wars or Rocky.
You could even go as far as setting the scene to a movie theatre or awards night and give your guests awards for the best dressed or most comical outfits of the night. This can be part of the night, and if planned well, you can make sure each of your guests wins a prize of some kind, even if it’s the boobie prize!
Let your imaginations run wild with the mix of movies and fancy dress, the options are endless. Here are just a few great films from past decades where fancy dress would be perfect.
1960s – Lawrence of Arabia, Spartacus, Butch Cassidy, Bonnie and Clyde
1970s – Dirty Harry, Rocky, The Godfather, Star Wars
1980s – Ghostbusters, Gremlins, Aliens, Top Gun
1990s – The Matrix, Terminator, Edward Scissorhands, Toy Story
2000s – The Dark Knight, Avatar, Lord of the Rings, The Incredibles
Who will you be? Have fun!

Do you dread that invite for the fancy dress party dropping through your door? Have no idea which of the many hundreds of costumes available to go as? Then here are a few ideas that hopefully will help. Fancy dress doesn’t have to be fearsome, read on and be inspired with the latest trends in the world of fancy dress.
Firstly it is important to find out if the party has a theme. Usually the invite will hint to a theme, or call the party organiser to check. You do not want to turn up as Darth Vader at a cowboy themed party! Once this has been determined look at the latest movie and DVD releases for some inspiration, for example, if there is a Hollywood theme you can choose from the many film releases for a popular character. Or if it is a more generic theme like pirates or Hawaiian you can make sure you fit in with the general look.
Then decide if you are dressing alone, as partners or even as a group. Often the best fancy dress are when two or more of you theme your own costumes. So if you are a family of four, look at dressing up as The Flintstone family, or for a gang of friends you could go as the superhero characters from The Avengers. For spouses or partners there are lots of matching style costumes, both themed and generic. Choose from his and her pirates, cowboys and gangster style fancy dress and of course famous characters such as Minnie and Mickey Mouse, Popeye and Olive Oyl or matching superhero costumes.
Once you have chosen your characters and costumes the fun doesn’t end there. Next you need to accessorise your outfit. Lots of costumes come with hats and props but it’s the all important small details that can really make a costume great. Fancy dress wigs can completely change your look and really top off a costume, what is Disco Diva without her huge afro!? There is fancy dress jewellery for retro costumes, wings and wands for fairies and angels and a whole host of themed costume accessories such as pirate hooks and eye patches, feather boas and Charleston beads and handcuffs and truncheons.
Hopefully after reading this blog the next time a fancy dress invite drops through you door you will be filled with excitement rather than dread. A Fancy Dress Costumes party can be the best party you will ever attend and making the most of these hints and tips you will easily be able to create a look you desire and a costume that will be the envy of all your friends. Now all you need is that invite and those Fancy Dress Costumes.
